NATURAL HAIR DOESN'T LOOK PROFESSIONAL... SAY WHAT??????????

"Natural hair is NOT professional."

I know i know....you probably have heard or said this before.
I did believe that as well, otherwise i would not have found comfort in my blowers and toners.

Mmmmmh it took me quite a while to appreciate my hair texture and have the confidence to rock it as it is.
i started my hair journey in feb 2013, and the whole time i was in school and didn't really mind wearing my hair all the time. But then in july 2013 i had to attend a friends graduation. then it dawned on me that i was going to attend a function with my hair!!!!! in its original texture!!!!!!!!! lol i was a bit nervous. i must admit. but needless to say, i gathered the courage.
I went for the graduation, and guess what? i was not the only one wearing natural hair that day.....

Since that day i rock my hair like crazy!!!!!!!!!!!! invite me for a wedding/party now, and am gonna show up in my fro. Tell me to go and check up on a patient somewhere, i will still show up in my fro.

The world has to accept that this is who i am, this is how God made me, and it doesn't get more professional than that..lol i know that doesn't exactly sound right..but yah!!!!!!!!!!
friend's (jhi's) graduation.

TRACTION ALOPECIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Traction alopecia is the gradual loss of hair resulting from excessive  pulling or excessive tension on the roots of hair for a prolonged period of time. It is most common in black women.

Cause

Wearing tight ponytails, braids or weaves for a long time.
If you have a history of wearing weaves for years like me, then you know what am talking about.

Treatment

Treatment  is not pharmaceutical, its mainly the cessation of chronic traction before the damage becomes severe or permanent. Treatment is only successful if the cause is recognised early and the styling practice discontinued.  In some countries, surgery or rather hair transplant is done to treat the hair loss.

Habits that stimulate hair growth.

  • Eating foods that are rich in protein ,zinc, biotin, vitamin E and omega 3.
  •  What you apply on your hair and scalp can greatly impact the progress of recovering from traction alopecia. Massaging the affected areas with oils that stimulate blood circulation such as rosemary oil and Jamaican black castor oil (JBCO) really help stimulate growth.

Where to find the oils:
JBCO – Sparkles salon, crossroads mall, Lusaka.
Rosemary oil:  shoprite

2014 HAIR RESOLUTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

current length
length chart

My hair is uneven, the hair at the back is at armpit length, the hair in front is at chin level.
My goal this year is to reach bra strap length, so help me GOD. In order to do that I have made a few changes to my regimen.

1.  Wash hair less, that is from once a week to once every two weeks. I can be very impatient sometimes, especially when it comes to detangling my hair. I noticed that I experience some breakage on wash days and so I just want to minimise on that.

2.  Increase the number of times I do protein treatments. I did not do much of these in 2013.

3.  ACV is a must now, to combat breakage from hard water.

4.  Wear more protective styles. Instead of keeping my twists in for a week only, I want to try keeping them in for 2 weeks.

5.  Moisturise and seal my ends more often.

WHAT ARE YOUR HAIR RESOLUTIONS FOR 2014???????????????

HOT OIL TREATMENT.

I was doing my hot oil treatment yesterday and I thought I should write a post about it.

Hot oil treatment is simply adding warm oils to the hair and scalp. It is used to give moisture , strength , body and shine to your hair. It is also a great treatment for dry scalp and dandruff.

Let’s get started…….

I used four oils for my treatment: extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), coconut oil, rosemary oil and tea tree oil. But you can use any other oils that you like and are great for your hair.

Olive oil:  EVOO is one of the few oils that are able to penetrate the hair shaft. It helps smooth and soften hair, making it easy to manage and thus reduces breakage. It is good for the scalp because it is both anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.
Coconut oil: coconut oil is my favourite!!!!!!!!!!! It contains lauric acid which helps improve the health of your hair. Hair is protein, coconut oil shields this protein by binding to it and thus protecting your hair from breakage. It also seals in moisture and prevents dandruff.
Rosemary oil: increases blood circulation and thus promoting hair growth because blood carries nutrients and vitamins to the hair follicles. It also prevents premature greying of hair by promoting the pigmentation process of hair.
Tea tree oil: good for your scalp.

I started off by mixing my oils in my applicator bottle, and then I placed it in warm water until the oils became warm.

Warming the oils.
I then applied to my scalp and massaged it and then I applied to the shafts of my hair paying close attention to the ends of the hair.
It took me about 2hours to finish coz I decided to detangle as I go. I put on a shower cap and a head sock and stayed with the treatment overnight coz I felt lazy to wash my hair (I usually wash after an hour).

Today I woke up with super soft hair, I washed my hair, dried with a t-shirt, applied coconut oil and sealed with shea butter. I then went on to braid my hair so it can air dry.

HAVE YOU TRIED DOING A HOT OIL TREATMENT???????? WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE?

LOCS HAIR STYLE ICON- BARBARA MWEZI

Barbara

Introduce yourself?

My name is Barbara Mwezi from  livingstone.

2009

When did you loc your hair?

Well, I first loc’d my  hair in 2005 but only for 3months. Then in 2008 I loc’d my hair again and I have had the locs since then.

What inspired you to do locs?

I decided to loc my hair because I felt that my kinky hair was not growing any longer and whenever I tried to relax my hair, I experienced breakage.

Weekly/ monthly hair routine?

My hair routine is simple. Am currently using bees wax, moulding  gel for hold,  and I use olive oil and bhrungamalaka hair oil to maintain and moisturise my locs.

BE GOOD TO YOUR HAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am sure you have come across people with ridiculously long hair and when you ask them what they do to their hair, they are like nothing!!!!!!!!!!

Yah, i also kinda managed to grow my hair even though i wasnt doin much to it. i was rough with it, my hair Never knew anything about conditioners!!!!!!!!!!!! i would just shampoo, blow , weave and so on.

Little did i know that my bad hair hair practices would EVENTUALLY catch up with me. They always do. No wonder there are always statements like :
"i USED to have long hair"
and when you look at the person you are like
'what happened?" Because you can hardly believe it.

This is a picture of me in 2011. My hair wasn't so bad, i mean with all the wrong hair care and staff.

BE GOOD TO YOUR HAIR, AND IT WILL THANK YOU FOR IT.

MY REGIMEN - 2013

2013 was dedicated to learning more about my hair.
i was focused on nursing my hair back to health.

When i started my hair journey i was in 4th year med school, school was very busy at times but i tried to find time to care for my hair. so my wash days were either saturdays or sundays.

WASH DAY:
  1. Spritz hair with plain water.
  2. apply my deep conditioner (DC), and detangle.
  3. put on plastic cap, wrap hair, stay with the DC for about an 30min to 1hr.
  4. rinse off DC/ Shampoo, depending on what my hair needed.
  5. dry with t-shirt
  6. apply my leave in.
  7. seal with shea butter.
  8. twist hair to air dry.

The DC i would use were:
  • V05 moisture milk + olive 0il + coconut oil.
  • egg + mayonaise + olive oil.
  • oils only (hot oil treatment)
  • coconut milk + oils + V05 moisture milk.
The DC i would use did not depend on anything, just how i was feeling that day.

Shampoo: ApHogee deep moisture shampoo.
did not shampoo every week, just when i used natural DC, dint want to go about with hair smelling of eggs.lol. or when i needed to get rid of product build up.

i never found a leave-in conditioner that i liked, so i used to make my own with V05, aloe vera juice and coconut oil.

DURING THE WEEK:
During the week, i would spritz and oil my hair every other day or whenever my hair felt dry.

if you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
thanx.

HAIR GROWTH FACTS

source

Hair grows half (1/2) an inch per month.

Whether you are good to your hair or not, it continues to grow; ¼ to ½  an inch per month. If that was not the case, people with relaxed hair would not have to do retouches and  every month you would not always  have a little under an inch of loosened hair between your scalp and the weave braids.
since the rate or speed of hair growth is about 1.25 cm or 0.5 inches per month, with proper hair care, you should have atleast 15 cm or 6 inches of hair per year.

Hair is dead.

Hair growth begins inside the hair follicle. The only "living" portion of the hair is found in the follicle. The hair that is visible is the hair shaft, which exhibits no biochemical activity and is considered "dead". because hair is dead, it has to be preserved, it cant regenerate itself or get rejuvenated by itself. The key to long healthy hair is preservation of the hair strands and preventing breakage.

hair follows a specific growth cycle.

Hair follows a specific growth cycle with three distinct and concurrent phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting) phases. Each phase has specific characteristics that determine the length of the hair. All three phases occur simultaneously; one strand of hair may be in the anagen phase, while another is in the telogen phase.
About 85% of the hairs on one's head are in the anagen phase at any given time.
The natural life cycle of a single hair strand is 2-6 years, and your scalp can shed as many as 60-100 hairs per day. The hair that is shed, is hair that has undergone the the full cycle of growth.

Scientists say that 80% of the Black population has dry hair because of the tight curl pattern.

Our hair as blacks is usually coiled or curled or its just kinky with no curl pattern at all. The twists and bends in our strands make it difficult for sebum to move up and moisturise or lubricate the hair, hence our hair is prone to dryness. and that is why moisture is emphasized in growing natural hair.

Trimming hair has nothing to do with growth.

Hair grows from the roots, not the ends, therefore, trimming has nothing to do with growth. Trimming should only be done when necessary, that is when you want to get rid of split ends or single strand notes.

Hair is 90% protein.

Like skin, hair is a stratified squamous, keratinized epithelium made of multi-layered, flat cells with overlying keratin (a protein), whose rope-like filament provide structure and strength to the hair shaft.

Hair breaks because it is excessively dry or abused

I have already mentioned that our hair is prone to dryness and if you do not moisturize it, it will break off and You cannot use chemicals improperly, burn the life out of your hair, contantly pull on the hair, whether it be from hair weave, synthetic braids, or hair accessories --and still expect to have long, healthy hair.

you have got to treat your hair right, if long and healthy hair is what you are looking for..

Women with extraordinary long hair practice GREAT discipline. It takes a lot of patience and hard-work to almost completely eliminate hair breakage. You have to be willing to put in the work.

ALL THE BEST.
